ABSTRACT
This aim of the study was to examine the constraints of effective teaching and learning of history in senior secondary school in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State. This study reviewed works of several authors. To guide the study, six research questions were raised which are outlined thus: the qualification of history teachers, method of teaching, availability of textbooks, availability of museums, unavailability of relevant teaching aids, government and parents negative attitude towards history.
From these research questions, 24 items were raised to gather the data for this study. The data collected were analyzed using the simple percentage and frequency counts. The expost facto research design was used for this study, population of the study consisted of secondary school students and teachers, a sample of 100 students and teachers were randomly selected from the population.
The findings from the study shows that most history are not qualified, also lack of adequate teaching aids, teaching methods, non-availability of textbooks hinders learning and the negative attitude of parents and government discourages the learning and teaching of history. From the study, it was recommended that government and parents should portray positive attitude towards history, government should also provide job opportunities for graduates of history. Moreso, adequate teaching aids should be made available for teaching, up-to date textbooks should also
