ABSTRACT

The study examined constituent order in the Esan nominal domain. It focuses on the investigation of constituent order patterns in Esan nominal domain. Constituent order pertains to the linear organization of elements in a sentence or phrase. Data for this study were gathered from a variety of sources, including several settings in which the native speakers use the Esan language freely, as well as published works in the Esan language. The framework adopted for this research is Noam Chomsky’s principles and parameter theory.

The major finding in this research shows that a typical constituent order in the nominal domain in Esan may consist of the head noun only or a head noun with optionally occurring modifiers. All modifiers are post head items with a strictly ordered pattern. The study also reveals out that the position of the nominal in Esan is head first. The study concludes by noting that the syntactic configuration of a typical constituent order in the nominal domain is N + [(Poss.), (Dem.), (Num.), (Adj.), (Quant.), (Prep.), etc.
