CONSTITUENT ORDER IN ẸDO PHRASES

ABSTRACT

This project work aims at examining the constituent order in Edo phrase. The basic point of the research is on the various phrases in Edo, it identifies the noun as the head of the NP and characterizes it in its various manifestations. Nominal items constantly interact with other items called modifiers within the NP. In contemporary morphology every phrase has ahead. The head of the Ẹdo NP occurs in both simple and complex forms. The data for the project was obtained from both primary and secondary sources including lecture notes in Edo syntax, published studies such as Omoregbe and Aigbedo (2012), Agheyisi (1986) and Omoruyi (1986).

The data collected was analysed using some of hypotheses suggested in Greenberg (1963). Specifically, the study looks at the applicability of universals 29 and 40 to the Edo language. The data analysis reveals that both universals were applicable in the language. The project work contains five chapters. Chapter one covers the introduction and background of the study, chapter two covers the literature review where the various phrases were discussed, chapter three covers the theoretical framework where Greenberg theory of universal language were discuss, chapter four covers the data analysis, chapter covers the summary, conclusion and suggestion of further study.
