SUMMARY
This paper has examined without being exhaustive, the use of language to articulate, the social, cultural, and political concerns of contemporary Nigeria by analysing how the two selected poets have used satire to criticise certain aspects of contemporary Nigerian society. The main aim is to distinguish societal expectations from reality as evident in Tope Omoniyi’s collection of poem entitled Farting President and Other Poems and Ebi Yeibo collection entitled Maiden Lines and Other Poems, As usual they made use of proverbs and irony, artistic elements that are grounded in African tradition and culture, to express social criticism and social engagement. The aim of this essay is essentially to explore the totality of literature as a tool for exposing those occupying political positions and their plutocratic way of governing.
