ABSTRACT

This study was carried out to examine conditions of service and attitude to work in the public service. We also ascertained the possible influence of salary, promotion, job security and training on attitude to work. 

Questionnaire was used to gather primary data. The researcher administered one hundred and forty (140) copies of the questionnaire to staff of the two (2) selected ministries (Ministry of Finance and Ministry of Budget/Planning in Benin City, Edo State). Out of which, one hundred and thirty-four were retrieved and were used for the analysis. The hypotheses were tested using Ordinary Least Square (OLS) regression technique.

The findings from analysis revealed that there is a positive and significant relationship between salary, training and attitude to work. The study also revealed that there is a negative and insignificant relationship between promotion, job security and attitude to work. In line with the findings, the study recommend that public service in Benin City as well as Nigeria should maintain the payment of employee salary as at when due their enable employee to stay on their jobs thereby helping these public services achieve a more rapid growth, and enhanced organisational performance and consequently improving the nation’s economy.
