ABSTRACT
This work studies compounding as a morphological process in Igbo. Compounding as a process in Igbo has been studied by many scholars, such as Oha (2011), Abubakre (2009), among others but these previous studies centred on what compounding is, verbal components and the classification of compounds into types. The approach of this study on compounding in Igbo is different from other studies based on the fact that it includes the classification of Igbo compounds into structure.
These the researcher intends to achieve through the collection of primary and secondary data from competent native speakers of the language. The work is divided into (5) five chapters: Chapter one is all about the introduction of what the work entails; chapter two deals with a review of related literature on the concept of compounding propounded by various linguists; chapter three is the theoretical framework; chapter four reveals a detailed analysis of the data and also emphasizes the structural and typological classification of compounds in Igbo language while chapter five is the summary, findings and conclusion of the work. Based on the findings, the meaning of compound words depends on the semantic relationship between the constituent morphemes that make it up.
It is hoped that this study serves as a contribution to the knowledge of Igbo and also as a reference material for future researchers who want to carry out studies on this topic.
