ABSTRACT
Cassava (Manihot esculenta) is a shrub in the family Euphorbiaceae. It is also known as manioc or mandioca. It is cultivated mostly for its tuberous roots from which a lot of products are produced including garri and starch. The aim of this study was to determine the best cassava variety that would be easy and economical to multiply.The experimental site of this project was the experimental plot of the department of Crop science, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Benin. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) replicated three times using three different cassava varieties. The experiment was carried out between May 2019 - March 2020. The stem cuttings were obtained from Agricultural Development Program (ADP) Benin. At maturity, growth attributes such as plant height, stem girth, number of branches, number of leaves per branch, number of stem cuttings, number of sprouts, and length of palatable stem were measured and analyzed. All growth attributes showed some level of significant difference among the three varieties. The highest value of plant height was observed in Tropical Manihot esculenta (TME) 419 having 182.14 and the lowest plant height occurring in Give Me Chance (GMC) variety having 143.23. TME419 showed the best output in terms of number of branches and length of palatable stem hence it can be recommended that for multiplication purposes, TME 419 is the best.
