ABSTRACT

This study was carried out to assess the comparison of the microbial quantity of smoke dried clarias gariepinus from the Oregbeni Market Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area of Edo state. The study is also to provide comparison of the bacteria and fungi present between smoke dried fish from the North(Maiduguri) and Benin. A total of 36 smoke dried fish samples: (18) eighteen smoke dried Clarias gariepinus obtained from six (6) northern sellers and eighteen (18) smoke dried Clarias gariepinus obtained from six (6) Benin sellers, from a major market in Ikpoba-Okha LGA were used for the study. The smoke dried fish samples were taken to the laboratory and analysed the fungi and bacteria isolation using potato dextrose agar and nutrient agar respectively and the microbial isolates in each sample were identified using serial dilution techniques. A total of 16 isolates were obtained and identified as bacteria and fungi, the bacteria isolates includes, Bacillus spp (7.80%), Streptococcus spp (7.09%), Proteus spp (4.69%), Pseudomonas spp (7.80%), Enterobacter aerogenes (6.38%), Staphylococcus spp(6.68%), Klebsiella spp (7.80%), Micrococus spp (3.55%).The fungi isolates include rhizopus stolonifer (7.80%), Aspergillus niger (7.80%), Aspergillus flavus (4.26%), Saccharomyces sp (5.67%), candida sp (4.96%), fisariu sp (4.96%) mucor pifigormis (5.67%), penicillum sp (7.09%).
