COMPARISON OF CONVENTIONAL AND BAG PLANTING OF WATER YAM (Dioscorea alata)

ABSTRACT

The study was carried out in order to evaluate the growth and tuber yield of yam grown in conventional and bag planting methods. The study was carried out at a private farm at Ogida, Benin City.  The experiment was laid on a paired plot design. Data such as number of leaves, plant height vine length and leaf length was measured. Data obtained were subjected to t -test analysis with one tailed unequal variance. The data were analyzed using Microsoft Excle version 19. Results of the study showed that all the growth parameters (number of leaves, plant height, vine length, and leaf length were higher in convention than bags methods. Also, weight of herbage, weight of yam and number of yam per hill was also higher in conventional soil when compared to that planted in bags. Hence, it is recommended that management practices that favour maintenance or build up of soil organic matter content be evaluated and applied in yam production systems in bag before use.
