ABSTRACT

Amplitude of accommodation is the maximum potential increase in the optical power that the eye can achieve in adjusting its focus and this may vary with different lighting conditions. The aim of the study was to investigate how different colors of light affect amplitude of accommodation among young individuals. A total of thirty (n=30) participants between age 16-30 years with  mean age of 23.6 ± 2.1 years. The study population comprised of 16 males (53.3%) and 14 females (46.6) and participants were selected by a convenient sampling technique. The minus lens to blur technique was employed to measure and compare amplitude of accommodation of participants under normal lighting condition (assuming white LED light) and under colored LED light (blue, red and green). Data was analyzed using the student paired t-test to compare amplitude of accommodation under the different colors of lights and amplitude of accommodation under blue lighting condition gave the highest value when compared to the other lighting conditions and this emerged statistically significant (p=0.00). Amplitude of accommodation was higher in female than in male under all the lighting conditions which was also statistically significant (p=0.002) and a decrease in amplitude of accommodation with increasing age was also found (P=0.003). Special care was taken to ensure same viewing and illumination under all test condition.

In conclusion, this results seems to suggest that colored lighting conditions have an impact on amplitude of accommodation as well as gender and age.
