ABSTRACT

This study conducts a comparative analysis of the estimated bioenergy potential derived from empty fruit bunches (EFBs), palm kernel shells (PKS), and oil palm fiber generated by two leading palm oil companies, Presco PLC and Okomu Oil, in Nigeria. The research aims to assess the bioenergy potential of these palm oil residues to inform sustainable energy strategies in the palm oil industry.

The methodology involves data collection on the production volumes of FFB from both Presco PLC and Okomu Oil. Energy content calculation is done to estimate the bioenergy potential of each of the three oil palm wastes studied based on calorific values.

The findings reveal significant variations in the estimated bioenergy potential among the different biomass feedstocks and companies. Factors such as production volumes, biomass characteristics, and processing techniques influence the bioenergy potential of EFBs, PKS, and oil palm fiber.

The study underscores the importance of harnessing palm oil residues for bioenergy production to enhance energy security, mitigate environmental impacts, and promote sustainable development in the palm oil industry. Recommendations are provided for optimizing bioenergy utilization and promoting synergies between palm oil production and renewable energy generation.

Overall, this comparative study contributes valuable insights into the bioenergy potential of palm oil residues from Presco PLC and Okomu Oil, facilitating informed decision-making and fostering sustainable practices in the palm oil sector.
