ABSTRACT
Vernonia amygdalina is a member of the Asteraceae family also known as bitter leaf. It is called a bitter leaf because of its bitter taste. In Nigeria, it is known variously as “Ewuro” in the Yoruba language, “Onugbu” in the Igbo language, “Chusar doki or fatefate” in Hausa. Ocimum gratissimum is an aromatic herb that has been introduced extensively across tropical and subtropical regions of the world. Growing as a weed, it invades disturbed sites, waste areas, pastures, and along roadsides, but it also invades natural vegetation, savannas, coastal thickets, and riparian areas. Fresh leaves of Ocimum gratissimum and Vernonia amygdalina were collected early in the morning from a garden. The leaves were cut from a non-flowered stalk and were identified and authenticated by a Botanist. 300g of bitter leaves and scents leaves was soaked in 150ml of cold water for 24 hours and the resultant juice extracted was air dried and stored.
