ABSTRACT

The photostress recovery. time test. is a helpful screening clinical procedure. used to measure the time required for the macular to return to its normal level of function after being bleached for a few seconds with a bright light source, which mainly. depends on the re-synthesis of visual pigments. and the functional. relationship between photoreceptors. and the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE).It is used to differentiate between maculopathy and optic neuropathy. Purpose: This study was carried out to compare photostress recovery time in glaucoma patients and in non-glaucoma patients.. Materials and Methods:. A clinic-based study was. carried out on 70 subjects who were used in this study. The distance visual acuity was determined. monocularly with Snellen’s test letters. Each patient’s eye was dazzled for 10 seconds. with bright light from 2cm from the eye to determine the time required for the patient to read at least, three optotypes. on the line correctly just above the patient’s best visual acuity that was recorded. Results: An independent sample t-test. was used to evaluate the difference. in photostress recovery time (PSRT) between non-glaucomatous and glaucomatous participants. The results revealed that non-glaucomatous patients had a lower mean PSRT of 19.3809 and 18.5471 in the right and left eyes, respectively, when compared with the mean PSRT of 28.7057±14.94 and 30.0894±15.27 in the right and left eyes, respectively, of glaucomatous patients. There was a significant difference in the PSRT of the two groups in the right eye (P = 0.002) and left eye (P< 0.001).. Conclusion: Photostress recovery time increases in glaucoma patients compared to non-glaucoma patients.
