ABSTRACT
This paper covers the use of different methods in the treatment of domestic storage water, to compare their effectiveness for improvement of water quality and improve public health. Different methods such as boiling, chlorination, and coagulation-flocculation were used in the treatment of domestic storage water samples from rain harvest, and two well reservoirs. After the control analysis of the water samples, it was discovered that the samples do not comply with the standard of water quality according to WHO recommended standards. Then, the water samples were treated, each with the three selected treatment methods. After treatment, physiochemical and biological analysis was conducted on the different samples after the use of each treatment method. The results obtained from the laboratory analysis were then analyzed and compared with WHO recommended standards for water quality to ascertain the effectiveness of various methods of domestic storage water treatment used. After the statistical analysis of four parameters, viz; PH, Turbidity, Total dissolved solid, and Lead concentration, the results showed that the method of chlorination is the most effective in the elimination of water contaminants, having an efficiency of 44.23% in the reduction of acidity for sample from first well reservoir, 30.91% efficiency for rainwater, and 31.48% efficiency for second well reservoir water. It also showed a 100% efficiency in the elimination of turbidity from the three different water samples. It was also discovered that the method of boiling, though the cheapest but has the lowest effectiveness in the treatment of domestic storage water. Recommendations were made in respect of these findings on the most effective way of treating domestic storage water that is consistent with minimum safety requirements.
