ABSTRACT

A feeding trial was conducted to compare the growth performance and survival rate of Clarias gariepinus hatchlings fed with commercial feed and diets formulated with maize and Beans by-products. The diets consisted of German wean/coppens (T0), Maize bran + inert diet (T1) and Beanchaff + inert diet (T2). The study found that the fish length gain and specific growth rate were not significantly different among the diets. However, the percentage weight gain and survival of the larvae fed T0 (commercial feed) were significantly different from the other dietary treatments (T1 and T2). The use of Maize bran (treatment T1) was highly recommended as substitution for energy ingredients in fish feed in the production of Clarias gariepinus fish.
