Abstract

This is a project on the comparative effects of Justicia carnea leaf and curcuma longa rhizome extracts on hematological parameters of broiler birds carried out at the Poultry Unit of the Teaching and Research Farm of the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Benin, Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria. This research was carried out for 8 weeks. Completely Randomized Design (CRD) was used while Analysis of Variance was carried out using GenStat Statistical packages and separated using Duncan multiple range test of the same GenStat package. Through this study, increase in erythrogram (i.e PCV, HB and RBC) levels was observed in treatments T2 and T3 of Justicia carnea leaf extract which had a significant difference (P < 0.05). Turmeric had no significant difference (P > 0.05) on the haematological parameters of broiler birds but rather showed antioxidant, antibiotics, antifungal and anti stress properties. Justicia carnea showed positive effect to the hematological state of broiler birds; thereby suitable for treatment of blood related illnesses in poultry and therefore maybe recommended in broiler production.
