ABSTRACT

Obesity plays a significant role in the onset of numerous non-communicable illnesses, including type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and various forms of cancer. Garcinia kola, also known as Heckel Gultiferae is a tree that grows in sub-Saharan Africa and is widely cultivated. It is often called a "wonder plant" because every part of it has medicinal properties. The seeds of G. kola are primarily valued for their medicinal properties, but they are still consumed as food. Over the last few years, G. kola has received quite a large research attention, mainly due to the content of a very specific bioflavonoid complex collectively referred to as kolaviron, whose distribution seems to be limited to G. kola. This study aims to compare the effect of varying doses of Garcinia kola extract on the weight of male Wistar rats in a control group and a group receiving carbohydrates. A total of 30 male Wistar rats were acclimatized for two weeks. Their baseline weight was noted and they were randomly assigned to five groups (control, carbohydrate, and three groups receiving 25mg/kg, 50mg/kg, and 100mg/kg graded doses respectively). The rats were administered their respective Garcinia kola extract graded doses for three weeks and their weight changes were subjected to Statistical analysis. The result obtained showed that 50mg/kg body weight and 100mg/kg body weight of graded doses of Garcinia kola extract increased weight gain significantly in male Wistar rats compared to carbohydrates. This study confirms that the effect of Garcinia kola extract on weight is dose-dependent and had more significant effect on weight gain compared to carbohydrate.
