COMPARATIVE EFFECT OF MYCORRHIZAL FUNGI AND NPK FERTILIZER ON THE GROWTH OF CASSAVA (Manihot esculenta Crantz) IN SOUTHERN NIGERIA

ABSTRACT

A screen house investigation of soil treatment effects on the response of cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) to mycorrhizal inoculum, NPK fertilizer and control treatment was evaluated in this study at the Rubber Research Institute of Nigeria (RRIN), Iyanomo, Benin City. Heated soil samples were placed in polyethylene bags with treatments applied with the following treatment; mycorrhizal spore, NPK fertilizer and control without either treatment. The mean height and girth measurements were assessed at 7 weeks after planting. Mycorrhizal spores in soil sample and root colonization of cassava were evaluated at 10 weeks after planting and mycorrhizal infection was calculated. A total of 80% mycorrhizal infection was recorded for mycorrhizal treatment soil, 42.67% for control soil sample and 28% for NPK treatment. The mean height increase for mycorrhizal treatment sample was 77.71, 57.61 for NPK treatment sample and 33.79 for control soil sample. No significant difference was detected for plant vigour (girth). Significant increase in wet and dry weight were obtained at P ≤ 0.01and P ≤ 0.05. The phosphorus, Nitrogen and Potassium content were higher in stem, petiole and lamina of cassava plants from mycorrhizal treatment samples than any other treatment. The increased biomass yield of cassava due to mycorrhizal inoculation will help in sustainable agriculture.
