ABSTRACT

The aim of this research work is to provide a sustainable and low-cost housing using locally available materials (Laterite) as replacement for conventional fine aggregate (sand) in sandcrete brick production with the view of reducing the cost of building construction. This research work will be focused on the comparative analysis of the compressive strength of laterite blocks and sandcrete blocks enhanced with lime. The results of the Atterberg limits test show that the laterite has the liquid limit (LL) of 37%, plastic limit (PL) of 11% and plasticity index of 26%. It is concluded that the use of 10% by weight of hydrated lime addictive were the optimum amount for the stabilization treatment. The maximum compressive strengths of 1.10, 1.65 and 1.94 N/mm2 were obtained at 7, 14 and 28 days respectively, for block specimens stabilised with a 10% lime content.
