ABSTRACT

This study investigates the comparative academic performance of social studies among junior secondary school students in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State, Nigeria. It aims to identify the factors influencing students' performance in social studies, a subject critical for fostering civic awareness and understanding societal dynamics. The research adopts a descriptive survey design, employing a structured questionnaire to gather data from 100 respondents. Findings reveal that students generally possess a good understanding of social studies and its key concepts. The analysis suggests that private schools, characterized by more experienced teachers and favorable learning environments, yield higher academic performance compared to public schools. Furthermore, it highlights that gender-related factors, societal expectations, and parental support significantly impact performance, particularly among female students. The study concludes with recommendations to enhance teaching methodologies and support systems, aiming to improve educational outcomes in social studies across junior secondary schools.
