COLLABORATION BETWEEN TECHNICAL COLLEGES AND INDUSTRIES FOR SKILL ACQUISITION IN MOTOR VEHICLE MECHANIC WORKS IN EDO STATE

ABSTRACT

The study investigated collaboration between technical colleges and industries for skill acquisition in motor vehicle mechanic works (MVMW) in Edo State. Seven research questions were raised to guide the study and one hypothesis was formulated and tested at 0.05 level of significance.           

The study adopted a descriptive survey research design. The population for the study was 80 respondents, made up of 53 technical teachers from five public technical colleges and 27 managers of automobile industries in Edo State. The population was adopted as sample size for the study because it was of manageable size. The research instrument that was used for data collection in this study was structured questionnaire. The questionnaire was made up of 35 item statements arranged in clusters according to the number of research questions. Items for each cluster was structured on a four point scale. The instrument was validated by the researcher’s supervisor and two other experts in the Department of Vocational and Technical Education, Faculty of Education, University of Benin, Benin City, Edo State, and a reliability of 0.85 was obtained using Cronbach alpha coefficient formula.

Based on the findings of the study, it was recommended that industries should collaborate with technical colleges through training and re-training of technical teachers, provision of modern teaching and learning facilities and granting permission for students to use its facilities during students’ industrial work experience scheme, amongst others. It was concluded that there was no adequate collaboration between technical colleges and industries for skill acquisition in motor vehicle mechanic works in Edo State.
