ABSTRACT
In a multilingual society, it is a common phenomenon that language users code switch and mix during interaction with one another. This conversational situation may either be deliberate or not. For the latter, the language user may not realize there is an interchange of linguistic components during utterances due to the conversational situation he finds himself. However, this fact does not lay bare in written communication. In written communication, a writer is deliberate and intentional with his choice of words, tone and diction. When code switching or mixing take place, it is believed that he has a reason attached to it. Either to make emphasis, reflect identity markers, justify his points, connect with society, among others. These reasons and weaknesses is what the research will uncover using Niyi Osundare's Songs of the Marketplace and Femi Olaoba's Golden Tribute as primary data.
