SUMMARY

An effort has been made in this study to elucidate the factors surrounding code-mixing and code-switching among the Isoko traders of Nigeria which includes the social motivations and effects of code-mixing and code-switching among Isoko traders and how it enhances communication and patronage in business transactions between traders and their patrons.

 This study identifies some social motivations for code-mixing and code-switching and they are; code mixing and code-switching for mutual understanding, for affectation and for solidarity. The different levels of code-mixing and switching which are intra-word, intra-sentential, inter-sentential and extra-sentential or tag levels have been used respectively to achieve the aim of unraveling the social motivations for and effects of code-mixing and code-switching among the Isoko traders of Delta State using Irri Main Market as a case study.

 A systematic and accurate description of several situations based on facts have been unraveled using the descriptive qualitative methodology which in this paper uses utterances describing the social motivations for code-mixing and switching as well as the various levels in which they occur.
