ABSTRACT
The study investigated the effect of class size in students’ academic performance in public senior secondary schools in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State. the study sought to find out the average class size, the level of students’ academic achievement, any relationship exist between class size and students’ academic achievement and difference in the academic achievement of students in small class size and large class size .to guide the study, four research questions were raised, two of them were answered while hypothesis one and two were tested at 0.05 level of significance. Descriptive survey research was adopted for the study. The population of the study consisted of eight thousand eight hundred and eighty four (884) students. A sample of eight hundred and forty-four (84) student were selected as respondents from three public senior secondary schools using purposive sampling technique. This research instrument were used for this study. They were class size student questionnaire (CSQ) and students’ academic achievement checklist (SAAC). Data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics (percentage and mean), pearson product moment correlation and t-test statistics at 0.05 level of significance. The finding revealed that the average class give is above the normal class size, the student academic achievement is high, and there is a significant relationship between class size and students’ academic achievement and in addition, there is a significant difference exist in the academic achievement in the mean score of student in small class size and those in large class size. Based on the finding of the study, the following recommendations were made: Public addressing system should be provided to enable effectiveness communication to take place especially in large class size and the current ratio of one teacher per 40 students should be encouraged as stipulated by National Policy on education.
