ABSTRACT

The study examined child welfare in the traditional society; A study of Okada village in Ovia North East Edo State. The objective of the study was to know if the traditions and cultures in the society incorporate child welfare; to know who a child is and what their rights is in the society; to ascertain the extent to which these rights are being abused or protected by traditions and culture and to find out the implications of the child welfare in the overall development of the child and the society.

The study adopted cross sectional research design. The study made use of the culture conflict theory as the theoretical framework. The population of the study consisted of adult who and children in Okada town. Three hundred and eighty four (384) copies of questionnaire were distributed to 384 respondents in Ovia north east Edo state as sample size. Data collected were analyzed using frequency count, percentages and mean, with the aid of the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) 24.0.

The empirical result revealed that traditions and cultures uphold child welfare in the society but that cultural and traditional perceptions has become a hindering factor to incorporating child welfare. The study recommends that need for reform that is based on a dynamic partnership between the formal systems and the existing community structures and traditions and the need to engage all effort and resources necessary for the effective adoption and implementation of the rights and principles enshrined in the Child Right Act.
