ABSTRACT

The project dives into the study of child trafficking in Edo State, Nigeria. Human trafficking in Nigeria had started during the early 1980 as a result of the governmental structure of the country at that period. Human trafficking became a norm in Nigeria which now included the trafficking of children most especially young girls for forced labour and sexual exploitation. The study examines the evolution of child trafficking, causes and ways in which these children are trafficked out of Edo State and also within Edo State. Child trafficking in Edo is an ongoing trend that started with the trafficking of young girls to Italy for prostitution in the early 1990s which now has taken new turns due to globalization whereby children are now trafficked for different reasons and are involved in the trafficking of hard drugs as well. The study further carries out research on effect of trafficking on the families and the victims in Edo State as well as the nature of child trafficking in Edo State. Research was also carried out on the roles of government and international agencies in the fight against child trafficking which explains the measures the government have put into curbing child trafficking. Result showed the effort of the Edo State government in the establishment of the Edo State Task Force against trafficking in humans. Roles of Non-Governmental Organizations and the school was also researched in the project which showed the different NGOs that have been established in curbing child trafficking in Edo State.
