ABSTRACT
A sedimentological analysis was carried out on eighteen (18) samples and chemostratigraphic characterization using major oxides and trace elements was carried out on eight (8) samples selected at random from the above eighteen (18) samples in JG-well with the aim to establish the provenance, tectonic setting, paleo-redox condition and sandstone classification. Result from the geochemical analysis revealed that the shales have high Fe2O3, K2O, TiO2, La, Ba, V, Th, Ni, Zn, Co, Sc, and U content more than the sandstone, whereas, sandstone is higher in SiO2 and Cu than the shales. Sedimentological analysis revealed that JG-well has four (4) major lithofacies which are sands, sandyshale, shalysand, and shale. Chemostratigraphic characterization using major and trace elements ratios inferred that the sediments of JG-well are derived from a felsic rock in a passive continental margin. Redox-sensitive elemental ratio of U/Th and V/Cr indicated that the sediments of JG-well was deposited in an oxic environment and different sandstone classification schemes used in this work characterized the sediments as sublitharenite and Fe-rich sand.
