ABSTRACT

The main purpose of this project is to show the relationship between the number of blocks per bag, the compressive strength and cost of production for solid sandcrete blocks. The dimension for the solid blocks are 450mm x 125mm x 225mm also known as 5-inches block. The sand used for this test is the Ovbiogie type of sand found in Ovia North East LGA, Edo State, Nigeria. With different mix ratios used in producing different sets of solid blocks, the blocks after being cured to improve its strength were taken to the Structural Laboratory to test their strength on the compression machine and each values recorded and compared. The test showed that ratio 1:6 ( i.e. 15.36 blocks per bag) gave an average 7-day compressive strength of 0.934N/mm2 and a 28-day compressive strength of 1.404N/mm2 . 1:8 gave a compressive strength of 0.788 – 1.194N/mm2 . 1:10 gave a compressive strength of 0.658 – 1.007N/mm2 . 1:12 gave a compressive strength of 0.513 – 0.795N/mm2 . 1:14 gave a compressive strength of 0.356 – 0.572N/mm2 . The conventional ratio used by most block industries in Benin, that is, 1:16 (37.31 blocks per bag) and 1:18 (41.70 blocks per bag) gave an average 7-day strength of 0.080 - 0.270N/mm2 and an average 28-day strength of 0.122 – 0.424N/mm2
