ABSTRACT

Accommodation is an important process in the visual system that allows the eye to adjust focus in response to changes in the distance of the object being viewed. Essential for a variety of visual tasks such as reading, writing, and using digital devices. Incorrect or compromised accommodation can lead to problems such as eye strain, blurred vision, and headaches. Several factors affect the eye's accommodative response, including age, refractive error, and characteristics of the lens and other ocular structures. Ocular biometry measurements can provide valuable information on these factors and help predict the accommodative response of the eye. This observational study examined the changes in ocular biometry in myopic and non –myopic young adults using A-scan. A total of 46 patients were used, the age of the myopic group ranged from 18 - 26 years with the average being 22.46 ± 1.68 years while that of the non-myopic group ranged from 18 - 27 years with an average of 22.40 ± 2.98 years. There was no significant difference between the ages of both groups (p = 0.848). There were 17 females and 9 males in the myopic group while there was 11 females and 9 males in the non-myopic group. Data collected was analyzed using the statistical package for social science (SPSS) version 23.0 for windows (SPSS, Chicago, IL, USA). The distribution of gender between both groups was similar (p = 0.474). In the myopic group, the average axial length was 23.65 ± 0.40mm at 6m and 24.75 ± 0.53mm at 10cm. While in the nonmyopic group, the average axial length was 22.48 ± 0.68mm at 6m and 23.68 ± 0.72mm at 6m. With Mann-Whitney U test, there was no significant difference in the change axial length, anterior chamber depth or lens thickness between the myopic and non -myopic young adults during shortterm accommodation. However, there was a week positive relationship between the degree of myopia, axial length and lens thickness.
