CHALLENGES OF YOUTH UNEMPLOYMENT IN NIGERIA AND THE POSSIBLE SOLUTION; A CASE STUDY OF OREDO LOCAL GOVERNEMNT AREA EDO STATE

ABSTRACT

 This research sought to examine the challenges of youth unemployment in Nigeria and the possible solution with specific focus on Oredo local government area Edo state. The study made use of questionnaire to obtain data from respondent. Five objectives were raised for the study. The study found thata relationship between rapid population growth and youth unemployment. This means that rapid population growth play a significant influence on youth unemployment in Nigeria. It also found that there is a relationship between youth unemployment and social vices. This indicates that youth unemployment has significant influence on social vices. The study concluded that Unemployment has adverse consequences on the Nigerian economy. From our study, employment generation has been seen as a means of alleviating poverty, increasing the level of economic activities which translate into economic growth. The situation of unemployment in Nigeria has been on the increase which has resulted to the increase in: social vices, human capacity under-utilization; increased poverty amongst the citizenry, social alienation and weak purchasing power among other negativity. and thus recommended thatGovernment should invest heavily in education that will enable the youth to become self reliance instead of job seekers through skills development and training in Oredo Local Government Area.
