CHALLENGES IN TEACHING AND LEARNING HISTORY IN SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOLS: A CASE STUDY OF ESTAKO WEST LGA, EDO STATE

ABSTRACT

This research study investigated challenges in teaching and learning history in senior secondary schools: a case study of Estako West Local Government Area, Edo State. Five (5) research questions were raised to guide the study. The respondents comprised of fifty (50) senior secondary school students. The research method used for this study is the survey research technique. In organizing and presenting collected data, tables and percentages were used. This study was aimed at seeing the different challenges encountered while teaching and learning history in senior secondary school particularly in Etsako West Local Government Area, Edo State. To solve the research problem, various methodology was used such as population of the study and sample and sampling techniques. The research instrument used in collecting data was questionnaire. The questionnaire was divided into two sections, Section A which was designed to obtain personal information from the respondents, and Section B which comprised of items on the topic under investigation. The instrument was reviewed and validated by the project supervisor and other experts in the Department of Educational Foundations, Faculty of Education, University of Benin, Benin City. The findings revealed that lack of time is a major challenge of teaching and learning History. Unavailability of resources and the method with which the teachers teach the students is also another factor. Various recommendations were made to effectively teach and learn History in senior secondary schools in Etsako West Local Government Area of Edo State.
