ABSTRACT
Small and medium enterprises (SMEs), which account for 96% of businesses in Nigeria are often forced to close because of the various challenges they face which ranges from government policies to inadequate finance. The purpose of this study was to explore the challenges facing Small and Medium scale entreprises in Nigeria with specific focus on Benin City. Three objectives and research questions were raised to guide the study. The study made use of questionnaire to elicit information from respondents in the study area. The study revealed that there is no effective communication flow from the government to SME operators. It was also discovered that government policies were among the numerous challenges facing the Small and Medium Scale enterprise in Nigeria. The study concluded that Small and medium scale enterprises are long believed to be instrument of economic growth and development. This has been true in developed economies as experience from developed nations, but same cannot be said of the developing countries, particularly Nigeria where SMEs performance is quite low The study thus recommend that The Nigeria government in the light of the outcome of this study should endeavour to put in place adequate machinery that would enable and promote the workforce of SMI competence as this will greatly reduce the level of discontentment nursed by SMI operators in relation to the financial accessibility. The inadequacies on the part of the SME management can find explanation in the persistent crisis and failure that have bedeviled the sector.
