ABSTRACT
This study investigated the challenges encountered by English and Literature final students during teaching practice exercise in Faculty of Education, University of Benin, Benin City. To achieve the purpose of the study, four research questions were raised and examined. The sample size for the study was made up of 118 final year English and Literature students. The questionnaire was the instrument for data collection. The correlation research design was adopted for the study. An analysis of data was done using mean score and standard deviation.
The findings from the study include that unconducive learning environment constitutes a significant challenge encountered by English and Literature final students during teaching practice exercise. It was concluded that poor student-teachers relationship with teachers of host schools, lack of instructional materials, overcrowded class size and unconducive learning environment constituted the challenges encountered by English and Literature final students during teaching practice exercise in Faculty of Education, University of Benin, Benin City.
The study recommended among others that the management of the Faculty of Education, University of Benin should ensure that student-teachers are only posted to schools with conducive learning environment during teaching practice exercise as this will go a long way towards making teaching practice exercise an enjoyable and remarkable experience for student-teachers.
