ABSTRACT

This study examines the challenges and prospects of youth migration in IkpobaOkha Local Government Area of Edo State. Migration has become a pressing issue in contemporary society, particularly due to high rate of rural decadence among young people. The history of mankind, families, communities and nations inevitably gave rise to the issue of emigration crossing international borders present both exciting prospects and significant challenges for immigrants. The greatest challenges they encounter is culture shock, often triggered by the migrant’s initial sensory experience in their new environment. Cultural differences between the immigrant’s home country and the host country could be very challenging especially on how to learn the language, religion, values and lifestyles preferences of the host country. Both the native preparation and the newcomers face challenges in terms of assimilation. The host country’s reluctance to embrace migrants, particularly refugee, may be attributed to a lack of familiarity with the migrant’s culture. The failure of government in providing its citizen with essential social amenities has resulted in a high mortality rate among youths who engage in migration from one region or country to another, particularly those who chose the Libya Mediterranean en route Europe. Efforts by European government to reduce the number of Africa asylum seekers arriving in Europe via the Libya Mediterranean route involves collaboration with African government to address the issue of irregular migration and provide higher education, employment opportunity and technological skills for African within Africa while youth migration can offer promising prospects; it also presents several challenges and applications. The study adopted semi structure questionnaire as primary data instrument and tested with the aid of frequency counts, percentage and average means .It Observed that there is a significant strategy and the possible panacea in addressing youth migration. The sample size for this study was 500 research participants. From the research carried out, some findings were deduced which include: that young people in IkpobaOkha Local Government region predominantly engage in rural-tourban migration within Nigeria rather than international migration. This movement is primarily driven by factors such as educational opportunities, employment prospects and income potentials. Furthermore, social and cultural factors, such as family networks and community ties, also play a significant role in youth migration patterns. This research paper has further broadened my knowledge that youth migration has more Challenges than opportunities.
