ABSTRACT

This research investigates the causes of building collapse in Edo State, Nigeria, examining theireffects and preventive measures. The aim of this study is to ascertain the causes of buildingcollapse in Edo State, which will help stakeholders in the building industry tackle the futurebuilding collapses. Three research objectives were formulated: Examine the causes of buildingcollapse in Edo State, to identify the effects of building collapse in Edo State, propose preventivemeasurestomitigatebuildingcollapse.Theresearchpopulationconsistsofstakeholdersinvolved in the construction industry in Edo State. A representative sample was selected for datacollection using structured questionnaires. The Mean Item Score analysis was used to analyze thedata according to the research objectives. The findings indicate that factors such as faulty design,poor construction materials, and lack of maintenance are significant contributors to buildingcollapse. These factors are perceived as highly severe, leading to loss of life, economic losses,and infrastructure damage. The study highlights the importance of strict enforcement of buildingcodes,enhancingprofessionalcompetency,andpromotingpublicawarenessaseffectivepreventive measures. The research concludes that addressing the causes of building collapserequiresamultifacetedapproachinvolvingregulatory,professional,andpublicengagementstrategies. The findings contribute to the body of knowledge on building collapse prevention andprovidepractical recommendations forenhancingbuildingsafetyin EdoState.
