ABSTRACT

The study was carried out to investigate the causes and impact of indoor air pollution on the health of secondary school students in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State. Five (5) research questions were raised to guide the study. The method adopted by the researcher is the descriptive survey research design. A review of related literature was carried out. A total of six thousand, eight hundred and twelve (6,812) public senior secondary school students in Egor Local Government Area constituted the population of the study. A sample of one hundred (100) size were used. The instrument used for gathering data from the selected sample was a questionnaire. The reliability of the instrument was established at 0.76 using Cronbach statistics. The data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics.

The study revealed that, overcrowded classroom, spraying of perfume in the classroom, sneezing, coughing openly in the classroom are some of the causes of indoor air pollution in the classroom. The presence of ill students and mold exposure on the wall and floors in the classroom can lead to indoor air pollution and also have impact on students health. It was recommended that the school management and administrators should locate general waste bins and restrooms distance away from classrooms. Some measures should be carried out by students themselves who occupy the classrooms such as proper disposal of solid and liquid wastes, keeping the classroom clean and urinating and defecating in the proper location indicated by the school authorities will help in preventing indoor air pollution.
