CAUSES AND EFFECTS OF DEPRESSION AMONG UNIBEN STUDENTS

ABSTRACT

Depression, a prevalent mood disorder, which casts a long shadow, affecting not only emotional well-being but also physical health. This study explores the potential causes and perceived effects of depression among university of benin students, Nigeria. The study had four objectives. The first objective was to find out the potential causes of depression among University of Benin Students. The second objective was aimed at finding out the perceived effects of depression encountered by University of Benin Students and ranking them in their degree of severity. The next objective was concerned with the level of depression among University of Benin Students. Lastly the study was to identify if students from low income homes were more depressed than students from high income homes. The target population of this study compriseduniversity of benin students.Random sampling technique was used to select thestudents who participated in the study. A sample of 200 students across 5 faculties of the University of Benin were selected through convenient sampling. Quantitative data was collected from respondentsthroughthe survey methodusing aquestionnaire.It was analyzedusing descriptivestatistics. From the study it is was discovered that the potential causes of depression were due to lack of support and personal life problems followed by financial pressures, then feeling overwhelmed by academic work, difficulty with socializing or making friends, lack of sleep and unhealthy eating habits, loneliness or isolation, family problems and relationship problems and finally feeling like they don't belong and the perceived effects of depression were losing friends or relationships, followed by feeling tired or having low energy, then finding it difficult to connect with others, difficulty in concentrating or making decisions, withdrawing from social activities, loss of interest or pleasure in activities they used to enjoy, changes in appetite or sleep patterns  and finally feeling sad or down most of the time, the level of depression was averagely mild and it was discovered that 75% agreed that financial stress was a contributor to depression. Therefore, it shows that students from low income homes were more depressed than those from high income homes among University of Benin Students. The major findings of this study revealed that 54 students had suffered from relatively mild depression. It was also discovered that the minimum percentage of students (27%) had mild level of depression. It may be said that there is mild level of depression among University of Benin Students. Based on the results and findings discussed, this study recommends that: The early identification of depression among university students is significant in forestalling its progression to debilitating levels. Students should visit counselling centers and health facilities to seek expert mental health support.
