CATALASE ACTIVITY IN THE COLON, LIVER AND KIDNEYS OF COLITIS RATS

ABSTRACT

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is an inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) that causes long-lasting inflammation and sores on the inner lining of the colon and rectum (large intestine). Soursop leaves (Annona muricata L.) are known contain phenolic compounds and have been used to treat cases of inflammation. This research study investigated the activity of catalase (CAT) in the colon, liver and kidneys in male albino wister rats that had acetic acid induced colitis and were treated with extracts gotten from the leaves of Annona muricata, commonly known as Soursop. The phase one of the study was conducted to know the appropriate oral dosage of Annona muricata leaves extract to use for the treatment of acetic acid induced colitis in the second phase. A total of 16 male wistar albino rats were used and they were divided in fours into four cages (Cages A,B,C,D) based on their weight average. Cage A served as the control group and received oral treatment of distilled water (0.5mL/kg) for seven days, Cage B received oral treatment of Annona muricata leaves extract (150 mg/kg/day) for seven days, Cage C received oral treatment of Annona muricata leaves extract (300 mg/kg/day) for seven days, and Cage D received oral treatment of Annona muricata leaves extract (500 mg/kg/day) daily for seven days. After fasting for 24 hours, the rats were sacrificed and the liver, colon and kidneys were collected and kept in ice for biochemical analysis. The blood were also taken for hematological assessments. On completion of the various analysis on the samples, a dosage of 150mg/kg/day of Annona muricata leaves extract was taken as the appropriate dose for use in the next phase of the study.
