ABSTRACT

This research is focused on Building Collapse in Benin City, Edo State with a view to examine its causes, effects and remedy. Buildings are structural entities, such as houses or edifices, that are erected or constructed to provide lodging or shelter to their users for day-to-day activities. There have been many inventive ideas and cutting-edge technologies for mankind's benefit in assuring a safe, more helpful, and advantageous shelter. Building collapse is a major disaster associated with construction, development and national growth experienced in all countries of the world, but the proliferation and devastating impacts of Nigeria's sustainable development are of concern. The collapse of a building in Benin City has resulted in irreparable loss of valuable lives and property. This treatise has chained ideas through the literature, books, and personal studies / observations of various researchers. Many of the building collapses in Benin City are caused by structural defects, poor maintenance, sub level building materials, improper supervision and surveillance, carelessness, poor workmanship etc. Building failure is frequently caused by poor materials and design flaws. Bad design, shoddy construction, foundation failure, unusual loads, unanticipated failure modes, or a combination of factors are some of the most common causes of building collapses. The components of a building are also discussed in this study, the professionals involved in the building construction.
