This paper examines the diverse representation of the concept of blackness in relations to racism, geography and socioeconomic condition in Toni Morrison’s Home and Igoni Barrett’s Blackass. This research adopted Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalytic theory and Henri Tajfel social identity theory to demonstrate how the novels portray internalized racism to show that blackness is not a universal metaphor.
The data used in this research were collected from the literary texts and related articles from the internet. These data were literally analyzed using psychoanalytic and social identity theory. This essay, however focus on the portrayals of black identity in Nigeria and South America within the context of these texts.
Through this essay this researcher aims to identify the different representation of blackness in these texts and also show that racism is also a state of mind that is enhanced by the socioeconomic conditions of the characters in the texts.
