ABSTRACT
This study was carried out to determine the bioconcentration of metals around urban watersheds of Ikpoba river. Water and sediments samples as well as muscle tissue samples extracted from fishes and snails in the river were obtained. This procedure followed standard guidelines. The results obtained from the study showed the varying concentration levels of the following heavy metals: Lead, Nickel, Cadmium, Chromium, and cobalt. The statistically significant correlation of the concentrations of water and sediment samples across the upstream and downstream sample stations revealed that the increase and decrease in concentrations levels of these stations are statistically significant (p < 0.05). High concentrations in C. gariepinus, T. zilli, water and sediment samples suggest bioconcentration of heavy metals in Ikpoba river. Therefore, this study emphasizes the need to investigate the multifaceted factors governing heavy metal concentrations in diverse organisms and ecosystems.
