ABSTRACT

Medicinal plants play a vital role in treating numerous diseases in underdeveloped regions. Offering secure herbal remedies could serve as a pivotal strategy for improving healthcare accessibility while mitigating adverse effects. The liver, being the body's largest and most crucial organ, serves as a hub for essential biochemical processes. Its primary functions encompass detoxifying harmful substances and manufacturing valuable biomolecules. Consequently, harm inflicted upon the liver can result in severe consequences. A. grandiflora is among commonly used herbal remedy in Nigeria. The aim of this study was to investigate the toxic effects of the methanol leaf extract of A. grandiflora on the livers of male rats. A total of twenty male rats were randomly divided into four groups, each consisting of five rats. The study focused on sub-chronic toxicity, which was assessed by administering the extract orally on a daily basis for 28 days at doses of 200, 400, and 800 mg/kg to the rats. On the 29th day, blood samples were collected to perform biochemical analyses. Additionally, liver samples were collected for histopathological examination through tissue section preparation and microscopic analysis. Statistical analysis was conducted using One-way ANOVA, and statistical significance was established at a significance level of P<0.05. The results indicated that there were no noteworthy alterations in any of the examined biochemical factors, as indicated by a lack of statistical significance (p < 0.05). This implies that the use of methanol leaf extract from A. grandiflora over an extended period in rats can be regarded as reasonably harmless.
