ABSTRACT

Exposure of humans to leachate contaminated waters can lead to different diseases such as diarrhea. This study was aimed at bacteriological evaluation of municipal solid waste leachates. Standard bacteriological methods were used to enumerate the total bacterial count of the leachates using pour plate methods after serial dilution. The bacterial isolates were characterized and identified using morphological and biochemical methods and sugar fermentation test. The percentage distribution and frequency of the isolates were evaluated using statistical method. Samples from two locations were used in this study, these locations were St. Saviour and Iguomo. The total heterotrophic bacteria enumeration from these two locations showed that Iguomo sample had the highest bacterial colony count with values of 4.88 log10 cfu/g compared to that of St. Savior with value of 4.63 log10 cfu/g. The total coliform count obtained showed that Iguomo again had the highest colony count with value of 3.70 log10 cfu/g while St. Saviour sample had the total coliform count of 3.22 log10 cfu/g.
