ABSTRACT

Over 90% of people spend most of their lives indoor which can have environmental influence on their health and physical conditions. Biological contamination of indoor air is mostly caused by bacteria, molds and yeast, they can be dangerous as pathogenic living cells but they can also secrete some substances harmful for health. Hence, this study aimed at determining the bacteriological quality of indoor air of University of Benin, Science Laboratory Technology (SLT) head of department office for three weeks.The concentrations of airborne bacterial in indoor environment of Science Laboratory Technology (SLT) Head of Department office (Location 1) and secretary office (Location 2) was estimated with the use of the settle plate method in which triplicate agar plated were used to obtain the samples which were conveyed immediately to the Microbiology Laboratory where routine standard microbiological method were carried out. The results from this study revealed that the bacterial burden ranges from 4.19×102cfu/m3 to 6.81×102cfu/m3 in location one, week one and week three respectively. The viable cell count in location two ranges 2.77×102cfu/m3 to 4.87×102cfu/m3 in week two and one respectively. Statistically, there was no significant difference between the viable cell count of all samples from both locations at 95% confidence level. The bacteria isolates obtained from the indoor air samples of offices were Micrococcus, Acinetobacter, Bacillus and Enterococcus with Bacillus sp. having the most occurrent with a frequency of 40% followed by Acinetobacter with a percentage occurrence of 30%. Enterococcus had a percentage occurrence of 20% and Micrococcus had the least occurrent with a percentage of 10%. The zone of inhibition and antibiotics susceptibility pattern of air borne bacteria isolates showed that Micrococcus, was susceptible to Amoxicillin clavulanate and Imipenem, Bacillus was susceptible to Ciprofloxacin, Imipenem, Ofloxacin and Cefuroxime, Enterococcus was susceptible to Cefuroxime and Ciprofloxacin, Acinetobacter sp. was susceptible resistant to Cefexime and Levofloxacin. All Gram-positive bacteria isolates were resistant to Cefexime. The level of microbial pollution inside the studied office building should be classified as safe, though some action to improve the indoor air quality is needed. Therefore, we can conclude that the indoor air of the examined office building does not create exposure to bioaerosol that may cause an immediate threat of acute health effects.
