ABSTRACT
The study was carried out to evaluate the the bacteriological and physochemical quality of water samples in hall of residence within UNIBEN campus. Standard methods were used to evaluate the physicochemical and bacteriological properties of water samples from halls of residence. Membrane filtration technique was used for isolation and enumeration of bacterial from water samples while the isolates were identified using biochemical methods. The phenotypic virulence properties of the isolates and antibacterial sensitivity testings was done using standard methods. The pH, electrical conductivity, alkalinity, nitrate and sulphate were determined using analytical methods. Data were analyzed using Microsoft excel and descriptive statistics was used to interpret the data. The results revealed that the pH ranged from 6.33±0.25 – 6.99±0.35 while temperature and electrical conductivity ranged from 25.95±1.50 oC - 29.40±1.50 oC and 33.00±3.11 µS/cm – 159.00±8.11 µS/cm, respectively. The bacteriological analysis of water samples showed that the heterotrophic bacterial count ranged from log10 1.04±0.06 cfu/ml to log10 2.20±0.12 cfu/ml. The coliform count ranged from log10 0.754±0.21 cfu/ml to log10 1.34±0.04 cfu/ml. The identified bacterial isolates were Serratria marcescens, Enterobacter aerogenes Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Micrococcus luteus. The phenotypic virulence properties of the bacterial isolates showed that they had at least one virulence determinant evaluated in the study. The antibacterial sensitivity testing revealed that all isolates were sensitive to ciprofloxacin, erythromycin and tetracycline, while resistance was widely observed for metronidazole. It was also evident that they were found to have a MAR index greater than 0.2, which means that the isolates were of public health importance.
