ABSTRACT
The study was conducted to evaluate qualitatively the presence of bacteria on computer keyboards in shopping complex of University of Benin. Standard bacteriological methods were used for isolation and culture of bacteria from the keyboards. The isolates were identified using biochemical means and antibacterial susceptibility was carried out for the isolates before determination of their multiple antibiotic resistance index. The resulst showed that the isolated bacterial include Bacillus sp., Staphylococcus aureus, S. epidermidis and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The distribution of bacterial isolates from the keyboards revealed that at least two of the aforementioned isolates were found on computer keyboards and although, there were some keyboards with three of the four isolates. The frequency of occurrence of bacterial isolates showed that S. aureus and S. epidermidis had the highest occurrences of 60% and 75% respectively. Antibiotic susceptibility showed that most of the antibiotics had effect on the bacteria and thus the bacteria were susceptible to most of them. The multiple antibiotic resistance (MAR) index revealed that S. aureus and P. aeruginosa had 0.3 as their MAR index.
