ABSTRACT
A study was carried out to determine the presence of bacterial contamination on poultry feeds marketed in Ugbowo, Benin City. Three samples (A, B and C) consisting of three feed types Starter, Grower, and Finisher were aseptically collected and examined using standard microbiological analysis. The following contaminants were found in the bacterial isolates after they were initially characterized: Escherichia coli, Bacillus sp., Enterococcus sp., and Streptococcus sp. The feeds had a bacterial load ranging from 0.24 x 102 -1.65 x 102 cfu/ml range. Enterococcus faecalis had the lowest occurrence rate, while Streptococcus sp. had the highest occurrence rate. However, the isolates exhibited intermediate resistance to Rocoplin and Septrin and strong resistance to Ampillox and Amoxacillin. The isolates, however, differed in their susceptibility to streptomycin and ciprofloxacin, although they were very sensitive to pefloxacin and gentamicin. As a result, it was discovered that every poultry feed sample had bacteria that were moderately resistant and would be harmful to human health. Therefore, in order to increase production performances in poultry management, routine bacteriological quality testing of poultry feeds is essential.
