ABSTRACT

The aim of the study is to isolate and identify bacterial and fungi associated with coconut water contamination. Coconut were brought from Uselu Market, New Benin Market, Oba Market and UBTH Fruit Shop. The water (sample) was cultured using pour plate method on nutrient agar and potato dextrose agar. One millitre of coconut water was obtained using a sterized syringe needle and transferred to the sterized petric dish. The plates were incubated at 280C for 24hrs for bacteria and between 5-7days for fungi. Bacteria isolates includes Escherichia coli, klebsiella pneumoniae, Streptococcus sp, while fungi were Aspergillus niger and Penicillium sp. The colony count for both bacteria and fungi were not less than 30cfu/ml. the present of bacteria and fungi in coconut water may be seen as a contamination from the point of collecting the sample to culture preparation. Therefore, coconut water can be regarded as safe for human consumption.
