ABSTRACT
This study investigated awareness, knowledge, and assessment of political programs by viewers on Nigeria television authority (NTA) Benin. The agenda setting theory provided the theoretical framework. This study adopted a survey research method. The sample size of 32 was drawn from the population of the study. Online questionnaires were used to collet data. Data were analysed using simple percentages. This study revealed that political programs on NTA are popular even amongst the student population. The questionnaire data showed that 42.4% rarely watch NTA Benin political programs while 18.2% watch them daily. Furthermore, it was discovered that only 9.1% of respondents watch all NTA political programs. 57.6% are of the opinion that NTA Benin political programs are of good quality and 12.1% think they are excellent. 6.1% of respondents view NTA political programs as poor quality. 33.3% of the survey respondents opined that NTA Benin political programs are very informative, 60.6% favoured the option of somewhat informative and 6.1% selected not very informative. Of the 32 participants in the survey, 15.2% think that NTA political programs are very biased, 27.3% think that they are somewhat biased, 48.5% do not have any opinion about the bias of political programs and, 6.1% think they are somewhat unbiased. Of the total respondents, only 3.1% stated that the programs are very unbiased. For the accuracy of the information provided by the NTA Benin political programs, 18.2% selected that they are all accurate, 42.4% agree that most of it is accurate, 33.3% opined that some of it is accurate, 3% think very little of it is accurate and another 3% selected that none of it is accurate. 57.6% of the respondents were directly influenced by the political programs they watched on NTA. And, 42.4% were not. 36.4% stated that the programs help them stay informed about current political issues, 21.2% stated that they provide them with a better understanding of the political landscape in Nigeria, 18.2% selected that they influence their opinions and perspectives on political matters.12.1% claimed that they empower them to actively participate in political discussions and debates and only 12.1% claimed that they have no impact on them. Lastly, it is recommended that NTA Benin should encourage interactive engagement with their audience to better improve their political programs and also gain more viewers.
