Personal hygiene is essential for preventing the spread of infectious diseases and promoting overall health and well-being among children. This study aimed to assess the awareness and practice of personal hygiene among primary school pupils in the University of Benin Staff School, identifying gaps and areas for improvement. To guide this study, two research questions were raised. The survey research design was used in conducting the study. The main instrument employed to carry out this study was a self-structured questionnaire. The population of the study was 1200. A sample size of 150 pupils from three classes were selected for this study using the simple sampling method . The 150 pupils were selected from three classes which are : primary 3, primary 4 and primary 5 respectively. The validity of the instrument was established by giving it to the supervisor and two other experts in the field of the research study. The reliability of the instrument was established using the split half method of reliability which yielded a Coefficient of 0.77. The data obtained from the questionnaires were subjected to analysis using frequency counts and percentages.
Results from the study from the 150 respondents revealed varying levels of awareness and practice of personal hygiene among the pupils but it was concluded that the pupils had an average level of awareness of personal hygiene.This study highlights the need for targeted interventions to improve the practice of personal hygiene among primary school pupils. Schools and healthcare providers should prioritize hygiene education and promotion to foster healthy habits and prevent infectious diseases.
